Interesting article Vera! I was taken aback by the failure of Amazon’s automated recruiting tool. Automation has been key to Amazon’s growth and success, whether it is at their warehouses or driving pricing their decisions. I did some digging. It’s insane – but understandable – that Amazon’s system taught itself that male candidates were preferable. And although Amazon edited its program to make it neutral to “female” terms, it was still guarantee that the machines would not devise other ways of sorting candidates that could prove discriminatory. Insane!

After reading more about this and all the other examples you mention, I must agree with Jiabo Wan’s comment above. I hope for the future to be a combination of AI and HI (human intelligence), as simply relying on only one of those two could be dangerous!
